UK to consider Australia-style ban on social media for children
The UK government has launched a consultation on implementing an Australian-style social media ban for children in the UK, as well as other measures to better protect minors online. The government said on Monday it would examine evidence from around the world on a wide range of suggested proposals, including looking at whether a social media ban for minors would be effective, and if one was introduced, how best to make it work. "The consultation will look at options including raising the digital age of consent, implementing phone curfews to avoid excessive use, and restricting potentially addictive design features such as'streaks' and'infinite scrolling'," the government said. The UK's announcement comes as governments and regulators worldwide grapple with the rapid explosion of AI-generated content, which was highlighted this month by an international outcry over reports of Elon Musk's Grok AI chatbot generating non-consensual sexual images, including of children. The UK has already set out plans for an outright ban on artificial intelligence nudification tools, while working to stop children being able to take, share or view nude images on their devices, it said in Monday's statement.

Artificial intelligence and democracy: Towards digital authoritarianism or a democratic upgrade?
I) Introduction Do robots vote? Do machines make decisions instead of us? No, (at least not yet), but this is something that could happen . At the most important level, that of the electoral process, it is noted that it is not determined by the AI, but it is greatly impacted by its multiple applications . New types of online campaigns, driven by AI applications, are replacing traditional ones. The potential for manipulating voters and indirectly influencing the electoral outcome should not be underestimated. Certainly, instances of voter manipulation are not absent from traditional political campaigns, with the only difference being that digital manipulation is often carried out without our knowledge, e.g. by monitoring our behavior on social media. Nevertheless, we should not overlook the positive impact that AI has in the upgrading of democratic institutions by providing a forum for participation in decision - making . In this context, as a first step, we look into the potential jeopardization of democratic processes posed by the use of AI tools. Secondly, we consider the possibility of strengthening democratic processes by using AI, as well as the democratization of AI itself through the possibilities it offers. And thirdly, the impact of AI on the representative system is also discussed. The paper is concluded with recommendations and conclusions. II) Risks posed for democracy Misuse of AI tools can lead to the undermining of democratic political processes or the manipulation of individuals through specific targeting, which will destabilize democracy.

Rooted in Seymour Papert constructionist philosophy, this study examines how constructionist principles align with the expanding role of digital technology in personal and collective learning. We discuss the transformation of educational environments from hierarchical instructionism to constructionist models that emphasize learner autonomy and interactive, creative engagement. Central to this analysis is the concept of an expanded personality, wherein digital tools and AI integration fundamentally reshape individual self-perception and social interactions. By integrating constructionism into the paradigm of smart education, we propose it as a foundational approach to personalized and democratized learning. Our findings underscore constructionism enduring relevance in navigating the complexities of technology-driven education, providing insights for educators and policymakers seeking to harness digital innovations to foster adaptive, student-centered learning experiences.

Mental Health Diagnosis in the Digital Age: Harnessing Sentiment Analysis on Social Media Platforms upon Ultra-Sparse Feature Content

Amid growing global mental health concerns, particularly among vulnerable groups, natural language processing offers a tremendous potential for early detection and intervention of people's mental disorders via analyzing their postings and discussions on social media platforms. However, ultra-sparse training data, often due to vast vocabularies and low-frequency words, hinders the analysis accuracy. Multi-labeling and Co-occurrences of symptoms may also blur the boundaries in distinguishing similar/co-related disorders. To address these issues, we propose a novel semantic feature preprocessing technique with a three-folded structure: 1) mitigating the feature sparsity with a weak classifier, 2) adaptive feature dimension with modulus loops, and 3) deep-mining and extending features among the contexts. With enhanced semantic features, we train a machine learning model to predict and classify mental disorders. We utilize the Reddit Mental Health Dataset 2022 to examine conditions such as Anxiety, Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), and Bipolar-Disorder (BD) and present solutions to the data sparsity challenge, highlighted by 99.81% non-zero elements. After applying our preprocessing technique, the feature sparsity decreases to 85.4%. Overall, our methods, when compared to seven benchmark models, demonstrate significant performance improvements: 8.0% in accuracy, 0.069 in precision, 0.093 in recall, 0.102 in F1 score, and 0.059 in AUC. This research provides foundational insights for mental health prediction and monitoring, providing innovative solutions to navigate challenges associated with ultra-sparse data feature and intricate multi-label classification in the domain of mental health analysis.

On January 18, Time magazine published revelations that alarmed if not necessarily surprised many who work in Artificial Intelligence. The news concerned ChatGPT, an advanced AI chatbot that is both hailed as one of the most intelligent AI systems built to date and feared as a new frontier in potential plagiarism and the erosion of craft in writing. Many had wondered how ChatGPT, which stands for Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer, had improved upon earlier versions of this technology that would quickly descend into hate speech. The answer came in the Time magazine piece: dozens of Kenyan workers were paid less than $2 per hour to process an endless amount of violent and hateful content in order to make a system primarily marketed to Western users safer. It should be clear to anyone paying attention that our current paradigm of digitalisation has a labour problem. We have and are pivoting away from the ideal of an open internet built around communities of shared interests to one that is dominated by the commercial prerogatives of a handful of companies located in specific geographies.
